Life in San Miguel, Quintessential California – Paintings by W. Truman Hosner / Claggett-Rey Gallery / Opening: Friday, November 17, 2023

In the Spring of this year, Hosner spent 3 weeks painting in San Miguel, California. “I had a small window of time before I was returning to Michigan for the Summer. So, I decided to focus on San Miguel and tell the story of life in this small California town that sits just north of Paso Robles. There was an intimacy I recognized in the light as it revealed the town and its people.”

Pastel Society of the West Coast – 37th Annual Exhibition at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, CA / September thru October 2023

PSWC’s 37th Annual, titled Pastels USA-’99 Voices affords pastel painters the honor of exhibiting in this jewel of a museum that holds a profound permanent collection. The title of Hosner’s painting, Everything Past is Present is a play on words. The sunlight floods across the scene from a winter window combining past and present objects into a Christmas landscape. “Susanna and I were enjoying Lattes and the lay of the foam in the empty cup caught my attention… I simply inserted my cup into the scene”.

California Art Club 112th Gold Medal Exhibition at the Bowers Museum in Orange, CA / July thru August 2023

Hosner created Noon Bells, Old Mission San Miguel Arcangel on-site in San Miguel, CA. The subject is the old bell tower which was painted at high noon… a most challenging time of the day in terms of light and heat. “While standing there I could imagine the Fathers coming in from their various morning tasks for noon dinner”.

Voices in Pastel at the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University, Orange, CA / September through December, 2022

I created Orchard Gate, Varian Ranch on-sight in November of 2021. My partner Susanna introduced me to Parkfield, California about 8 years ago, it is a favorite destination for us to paint, and grab a burger and a beer.

Parkfield is known as the Earthquake Capital of the World. An eclectic little town with a population of 18, it sits at the San Andreas Fault. It is also the home of the Varian’s V6 Ranch. The Varian ranch is 20,000 acres of cattle ranching and orchards which provide ample opportunities to make plein air paintings.
